It is with great enthusiasm that Superfície presents Retirar o sol das cabeças, uma reza das imagens, the first solo exhibition by the artist Gê Viana, with curatorship and text by Thayná Trindade.
Gê Viana’s poetic motto is the purging of the aesthetic-symbolic violence of historical images, built in the plots of Brazilian colonization. Revealing these images from one’s own private experience becomes a starting point in the journey towards understanding herself, as a result of the roots that constitute her indigenous and African descendants planted in the territory of Maranhão.
“Removing the sun from the head” directs us to the Afro-indigenous teachings of healing, cleansing and praying for everything that has been worn out, forged, forced, impoverished. From this way of seeing and being, it appropriates historical images from the Brazilian imagination, moves away the place of object and takes up the place of agent that reveals worlds, names individuals, generates diverse possibilities of affection, collectivities, joys, imbued trivial processes in colors, cuts and displacements presented in his works.
The exhibition is organized into five nuclei of works that circulated throughout Brazil and many other unpublished works. The present exhibition displays a panoramic view of the imaginaries constructed by Gê Viana on different supports—wood, raffia, paper, fabrics and lambe-lambe—and their artistic gems that allow the collectivization of stories, beyond traumas and erasures, allowing for aspirations of affection and happiness for you and yours.
