Galeria Superfície presents “canastra da Emília”, an individual exhibition by the artist Arthur Chaves. With text by Raphael Fonseca, the show features works from his recent production.

The works exhibited here walk by a fine line between installation, painting and drawing. Using a profusion of materials such as fabric, plastic and industrial waste, Arthur’s creations are on the threshold between the finished, and the open, ever-changing process.

The attempt of representation finds its support in an accumulation of materials safeguarded by the artist. Like the character Emília of Monteiro Lobato who kept in her trunk, in her canasta, everything that could ever have another form, Arthur creates his works from speculation about his inventory – the fabrics that remind him of his relationship with the mother, seamstress, and the leftovers, the industrial and domestic remains, become the raw material of what the artist calls “the capture of the subjectivity of his daily life”, a point of fixation of his thinking in the world, which, contradictorily, is not that fixed.
