Anna Costa e Silva — Só é possível se formos 2

23.10.2021—20.11.2021
Consulate General of Portugal, São Paulo

On Saturday, the exhibition “Só é possível se formos 2” [It is only possible if there are 2 of us] was inaugurated in Sala Fernando Pessoa of the Consulate General of Portugal in São Paulo. The exhibition proposes a dialogue between the Brazilian Anna Costa e Silva and the Portuguese Fernanda Fragateiro, two artists from different generations, practices and trajectories, who converge in their desires to think beyond the limits of the individual.

At a time when defending collectivity and deceleration of time is quite the exception, this experience tests the possibilities of not only being and building together, but of learning and un-learning as a duo, with all of its challenges. The works contemplated for this project were conceived in a correlation between the architecture, the gardens and the circumstances of the Consulate-General of Portugal in São Paulo; a space that symbolizes the complexity in relations between the two countries over five centuries. They are works that give rise to a paused experience of this place, ideally as a duo.

Anna Costa e Silva creates with her works a place for co-existence that is essentially immaterial and invites spectators to participate, who bring not only their personal baggage, but also our collective and shared history with them. In her practice, the artist from Rio de Janeiro fosters encounters between people of diverse ages, contexts and realities. Such encounters end up triggering feelings and sensations of intimacy and strangeness, while stretching and overflowing the boundaries between reality and fiction, the “I” and the other, experience and memory. In the Sala Fernando Pessoa, Anna designs a celestial installation, in two parts, that pays homage to the artist Flora Diegues, a friend and collaborator in many of her projects, who passed away prematurely in 2019. The first part consists of a video installation that projects images of the day’s “magical hours”: sunrises and sunsets captured from the window of a plane that flies over the Atlantic Ocean — the same sea that separates and connects Brazil and Portugal. The images are projected on opposite sides of a translucent screen, overlapping two time-spaces, or trying to fold time. The second part of the installation is set up as two moments of listening in separate ends of the room. At one end, an audio plays a reading of an e-mail sent from Flora to Anna in 2016. The response to the e-mail, written throughout this past year and unsent, can be heard at the other end of the room.

Her other piece is a drift experience, in which performers lead visitors through intimate and suspicious encounters that go beyond the exhibition space and into the city streets. The game begins with a series of notes, like messages in a bottle, left in unusual places in the exhibition space, with indications for an encounter with a (possible) stranger. The work takes place in this drift encounter. The city’s streets become scenarios for autobiographical narratives, which blurs the hierarchy between performer and spectator and create a field of connection and estrangement.

Lotus Lobo — Fabricação Própria

14.10.2021—30.01.2022
Sesc Pompeia, São Paulo

Curated by Marcelo Drummond, the “Fabricação Própria” exhibition brings to Sesc Pompeia warehouse the comprehensive and diverse artistic production undertaken by Lotus Lobo. With historic and unpublished works, produced in different media, materials and new forms of editing and printing, the exhibition covers the 60 years of the artist’s production, which encompasses her collection, as well as ways of thinking about the politics of images in the contemporary world.

The curatorial cut of “Fabricação Própria” highlights Lotus’ experience in relation to its collection and aims to give visibility and access to the artist’s production, demonstrating her relationship with art and her performance history from the 1960s to her current productions.

Born in Belo Horizonte, Lotus came into contact, in 1969, with the production of tinplate packaging at Estamparia Juiz de Fora (MG), where she collected dies from the first decades of the 20th century, and, from then on, by Through the appropriation and manipulation of images, he produced works that reveal the creative character of the factory environments, inviting the public to also experiment with new reading possibilities.

The gathering and displacement of these objects are ways of giving visibility to their composition, evidencing authorship, regional specificities and temporalities. It is precisely from a proposal to interrupt and invert the usual life cycle of such items that Lotus Lobo’s artistic and research work is constituted. The exhibition brings together, for the first time, almost the entirety of the set of Maculaturas, printing plates from Estamparia Juiz de Fora (MG), by Lotus appropriated as works from 1970 onwards, this time mounted in the form of a large suspended plane in the exhibition space. Important works by the artist are revisited, such as the case of Água Limpa, an unprecedented work that takes up the litho-objects awarded in 1969 at the X Bienal de São Paulo. Another important remission is the also unpublished Albor, in which he recalls a remarkable work from the year 1970: a reel of paper attached to the wall from which spectators could highlight and take home lithographed fragments.

“Fabricação Própria” is on view at Sesc Pompeia until January 30th, 2022 and can be visited by appointment through the website sescsp.org.br/pompeia or at the Credencial Sesc SP app.

"In the Wilderness" is the online equivalent of the artist residency, in which the resident artist is encouraged to roam the inner landscape of his choice. The processes investigate the intersection of healing and ecology, gender, race, sexuality, spirituality, activism or the arts. The experiment takes place from October 25 to 31, via zoom, restricted to one person per night. To participate, send a message to: +55 21 99406-9009 or annacostaesilva@gmail.com

Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
“La clase”, from the series ‘Buena Memoria, 1967–1996’, by Marcelo Brodsky, is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The artwork, which was acquired by the museum in 2006, now composes the exhibition “Pictures, Revisited”, a dive into the Met's contemporary photography collection to explore visual appropriations as photographic strategies. Brodsky's work was carried out in 1996, when he returned from exile at age 40 and found the image of his group of colleagues from the National School of Buenos Aires (CNBA), the class of '1st year, 6th division', as the caption says . Brodsky intervenes in the photograph with crayons, showing the fate of each one. Around that year, the artist organized a tribute to the disappeared ones of the Argentine military dictatorship, in which he made a list with the names of the murdered schoolchildren: it reached 98 at the time. Besides this Met edition, “La clase” also integrates the collections of Pinacoteca, Tate Modern, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, and has participated in 250 exhibitions around the world. “La clase” is in room 851 of the Tisch Gallery, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and will be on view until May 9, 2021, in the “Pictures, Revisited” exhibition.

Permanently located in Aachen, and holding one of the most important collections of Contemporay Art in the world, collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig founded in Aachen the first public Museum for Contemporary Art in the Federal Republic of Germany. Pinacoteca Luz, São Paulo
It opens on Saturday, December 8, at 11am, the largest individual exhibition of the artist Rosana Paulino in a large institution of the country, Pinacoteca. Recognized for facing social issues that emerge from the position of black women in contemporary society, the exhibition "Rosana Paulino: A Costura da Memória", curated by Valéria Piccoli and Pedro Nery, brings together works produced between 1993 and 2018 as Bastidores (1997 ) and Parede da Memória (1994-2015), which were decisive at the beginning of his career. These go back to her personal narrative and present themselves as a starting point for the exhibition. The first includes, as in the title, a series of embroideries with figures of women of the family printed on fabrics whose eyes, mouths and throats are sewn together, indicating the shadowing imposed on black women, often the result of domestic violence. In revolving the beginning of her personal history, Rosana Paulino observes that the problem of representation of blacks translates into their almost absence in the most varied aspects of Brazilian life and history, especially in the history of the visual arts.
