A Superfície is pleased to present Sistema-mundo, Marina Camargo’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, curated by Tiago Mesquita.

Originally from Maceió, the artist lives between Porto Alegre and Berlin, having studied in Barcelona and Munich. This geographical experience also permeates her work, in which the notion of displacement appears as a modus operandi for engaging with the established order of the world, primarily through maps.

From the outset, her practice has been guided by an expanded concept of drawing, where the act of thinking and the image move together. For the artist, maps are not merely geographical records, but structures that reveal the orders of the world, translating historical, political, and social narratives. It is within this context that Sistema-mundo, the artist’s new exhibition, is situated.

Ever since it became a positive technique, mapmaking has been a source of controversy. It involves establishing physical and political boundaries in a world marked by ongoing disputes and persistent crises, in which these violent territorial conflicts continue to intensify. Thus, the mismatch between the form of maps and the reality they seek to describe becomes even more acute. Marina Camargo gives form to the instability of these descriptions.

In the video O mapa redesenhado, for example, she strings together a succession of commonplaces about recent international transformations and the significance they hold for the redrawing of geopolitical and geoeconomic relations. The artist’s maps do not encounter clearly defined territories, but rather their corrosion. They attempt to give shape to absurdity, transformation, and collapse. No longer useful for orientation, that graphic project has become a projection of crisis.

In 2010, Marina Camargo received a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to study with Peter Kogler at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. Her works are part of several important national collections, such as the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul (MARGS), the Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP), among others.

The artist is also participating in the 16th Curitiba International Biennial of Contemporary Art, which will open to the public on June 16, 2026.

With its opening scheduled for Thursday, June 18, Sistema-mundo opens at Superfície and remains on view at the Oscar Freire venue through August 2026.
