Superfície is pleased to announce the inauguration of its new headquarters and the opening of the group exhibition Gestos, with a text by Paulo Venancio Filho and curatorship by Venancio Filho in partnership with Gustavo Nóbrega. The exhibition marks a new chapter in the gallery’s trajectory, bringing together, under one roof, activities that were previously spread across its two spaces in the Jardins.

Inaugurating the main gallery of the new space, Gestos brings together a significant group of artists from different generations, bringing into dialogue key figures from Brazilian and international art, artists whose practices have helped shape the history of contemporary art, and artists currently active whose research continues to expand this legacy. Taking as its point of departure the philosopher Vilém Flusser’s book of the same name, the exhibition explores the gesture as a movement charged with intention, freedom, and thought.

To exhibit is itself a gesture. Every exhibition simultaneously reveals and conceals: it makes something visible while preserving zones of opacity, opening space for imagination, interpretation, and encounter. Each work emerges from a singular gesture — a movement that not only produces a form, but also asserts a way of being in the world.

For Flusser, the gesture is an expression of freedom that produces meaning. Painting, drawing, photographing, engraving, modeling, writing, performing, or installing are different modes of thought in action. Each language invents its own gesture; each artist transforms a procedure into form.

Featuring a work by Waltercio Caldas conceived especially for the exhibition, Gestos brings together works by Andréa Hygino, Anna Maria Maiolino, Artur Barrio, Carlos Vergara, Celeida Tostes, Christo, Cildo Meireles, Clóvis Dariano, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, E. M. de Melo e Castro, Fernando Lemos, Iberê Camargo, José Resende, Letícia Parente, Luiz Alphonsus, Mara Alvares, Márcia X, Maria Laet, Mira Schendel, Neide Sá, Regina Silveira, Sonia Andrade, Thereza Simões, Tunga, Vera Chaves Barcellos, and Wanda Pimentel. Gestos proposes a journey in which different generations and historical contexts meet without hierarchies. What they share is the way each work reveals the gesture as an aesthetic operation, thought materialized, and a form of engagement with the world.

If the works are the result of gestures, so too is looking. Approaching, moving through the space, lingering before an image, establishing relationships between works, and constructing meanings are actions that complete the experience of the exhibition. Gestos takes shape precisely within this space of reciprocity, where the gesture of the artist meets the gesture of the viewer, also marking the beginning of a new chapter for Superfície.

Gestos takes place on the occasion of the inauguration of Superfície’s new headquarters, located at Rua Mourato Coelho 790a, in Vila Madalena. The new space brings together the gallery’s activities under one roof — exhibition spaces, the collection, and the Superfície Archive — as well as a bookstore and café open to the public.

The opening will take place on August 29, 2026, from 2pm to 6pm, and the exhibition will remain on view through October 17, 2026.
