“Please read it for me to rest in peace is a video installation directed by Anna Costa e Silva and Nanda Félix, which has as its starting point an envelope left by Nanda’s grandmother on the occasion of her death, written “Please read it for me to rest in peace. Very private papers, forgive me if I cause any suffering to my children, but the only certainty I have is that I couldn’t stay alive without love.” Within the envelope, a psychological report organizing this woman’s mental health into topics, and a series of letters and confessions to a priest.

MC’s story, little known by her family and its intensity revealed only after her death, was the trigger for this project, which takes her request to its ultimate consequences, inviting many women to read the report and her writings out loud, and also tell their own stories of oppression, silencing and the use of diagnostics as a form of controlling female bodies.

In these videos, we see a collective meeting with all the women participating in the project, with an out-loud reading of the report, a series of images and gestures made with female patients from the Casa Verde Psychiatric Clinic, and a tour around Pedro II Hospital, which was once run by Nise da Silveira, where instruments used in hospitalizations, such as straitjackets, electro-shock and lobotomy equipments are still kept. The story of these various women is placed in dialogue with Nanda’s grandmother’s story, and her request is transformed into a speaker for cries of pain and strength, in an overlapping of times and spaces.

The female body is a cultural agent that is born between the norm and deviation, a body where marks are imprinted in the attempt to control and dominate, but there is still something that escapes. From witches to hysterics, from wives to sex slaves, from standardized women to so-called deviant women, all to a greater or lesser degree are framed by masculinity as objects and not the subjects of their own lives. Who are these women and what did they have to imprison in order to be considered “healthy” in a patriarchal society?

Installation

“No calor da hora” (“In the heat of the hour”) was a public art projetct that invited artists to produce outdoors with works, that were placed in public spaces during the Covid 19 pandemic. While cultural instituions were closed and these spaces, originally occupied by ads, were also empty. Anna printed a large scale version of one of “The Attempts” photograph, that gained new layers when placed in public space at a time of political horror, genocide and the claim for impeachment. Also, one month before, Cedae, the Brazilian water supplier, which used to belong to the state, was put for sale. The image functions as a silent cry, that proposes a different rhythm from the ads that surround it.

The last drop of water. The latent overflow – individual and collective. Faced with the unimaginable, with all the exceeded limits, how far can one go? What else is needed for the glass to overflow? The attention to each one of the drops, the questioning of our edges. Water is the feminine, the emotion, the sensitive body – and it was put up for sale. A silent image that proposes another rhythm. A desire to listen, a low cry.

The encounters were not filmed or recorded, not to interfere or invert the non-finality aspect of the experience. Only one iphone picture was taken in each activity. The traces that this experience left are presented in an installation, composed of the ads, the artist’s agenda in the 21 days, a video of the attempt to put the add in the newspaper, strips of photos, books with all the emails and whatsapps that the artist received and memories of personal stories that were told during the encounters. These stories exist in private monoculars, that preserve their intimate nature, providing a one on one reading experience for the viewer with each story, as if he was entering a keyhole space.

I offer company is an action/ mode of living that happened for 21 days, in which the artist made herself available 24h/7 to offer company to any person in any activity. The artist posted an ad in the newspaper, virtual ad websites and social media: “I offer company – for any person, for any activity at any time: moral support, bureaucracy, listening, crisis, projects, boredom, things that are not done for lack of a company” and received messages and requests from more than 150 people. The artist’s agenda was totally free on these days, to be filled with encounters from diverse natures, and she could not choose which company requests to attend – it was first come, first serve basis.
